Ce manhwa (BD coréenne) a été adapté en drama, c'est comme ça que j'y suis arrivée. Et oui, maintenant ce sont les séries qui me mènent au manga/manhwa d'origine, et plus l'inverse (comme ce fut par exemple le cas pour Kimi Wa Petto/Au pied chéri/Be My Pet).

This manhwa (Korean comics) was adapted for TV into a drama, and this is how I came to read it. Before I was reading manga/manhwa and watching the drama adaptation (like I did for Kimi Wa Petto/be My Pet), and now it's the opposite :p

Synopsis

WI Mae-ri (prononcé " meri ", l'équivalent corréen du prénom anglophone " Mary ") a 25 ans et ça fait un bail (un trèèèès long bail) qu'elle n'a pas eu de mec. Un jour, ses deux meilleures copines, une future mariée et une styliste, l'emmènent voir un concert de death metal, et Mary tombe bien malgré elle sous le charme du chanteur: Kang Mu-gyeol.

WI Mae-ri (pronounced " meri ", or the Korean equivalent of the English name " Mary ") is 25 years old and hasn't dated anyone for a looong time. One day, her two besties (a future bride who loves vintage clothes and a clothes designer) take her to a death metal concert, and Mary falls (against her own will) for Kang Mu-gyeol, the charismatic and oh-so-charming singer.

Nos deux tourtereaux vivent le parfait amour, bien qu'ils se chamaillent souvent, venant de mondes très différents, et ayant chacun une personalité bien trempée. Ils sont tellement amoureux qu'ils décident de se marier et organisent une petite cérémonie avec leurs amis.

Our two lovebirds are deeply in love, despite fighting quite often as they come from different backgrounds and both have strong personalities. they are so in love that they decide to get married, and organise a small ceremony with their friends.

Sauf que le père de Mary a déjà promis sa fille au fils de son meilleur ami. Tant et si bien que les deux compères ont même falsifié un certificat de mariage aux noms de leurs enfants. Mary est donc mariée religieusement à Mu-gyeol, mais sur le papier elle est la femme du charmant Jung In.

But Mary's dad has already promised his daughter's hand to his best friend's son. So much that both fathers have forged a marriage certificate bearing the names of their children. Mary is thus religiously married to Kang Mu-gyeol, but she's legally the wife of charming Jeong In.

Mon avis - Review

Malheur, oh grand malheur! Il est très difficile de se procurer cette série dans une langue autre que le coréen. Et je ne parle ni ne lit le coréen :p Parait qu'elle a été publiée à Taiwan, donc je pourrais essayer de rafraichir mon Mandarin (mais à Taiwan ce sont des caractères traditionels et moi j'ai appris le chinois simplifié du continent, donc on n'est pas sorti de l'auberge).

Ah! So terrible! It is very very difficult to get this series in a language other than Korean. And I don't speak nor read Korean 😦 Apparently it was published in Taiwan, so I could possibly get my hand on a Taiwanese copy and try my luck with my rusty Mandarin (but then again, I learnt the simplified version of the continent, not the traditional characters from old Formosa). What a headache!!

Donc pour le moment, j'ai lu 42 chapitres, parce que c'est tout ce qui est dispo sur la toile en version scannée et traduite. 42 chapitres, ça fait peut-etre eux ou trois volumes, alors que la série en comporte 10, donc il nous manque tout de même pas mal de choses. Ma chronique va donc être assez succinte :p

So for now, I've read all the 42 chapters available online and translated in English. That's maybe the equivalent of 2 books, when the series has 10. So quite a lot of things are missing. The chapters are super shorts, like 2 or 3 pages. My review will thus be quite short :p

Les chapitres, d'ailleurs, sont hyper courts. C'est genre trois pages. Je suis surprise de ce format " serré ", c'est peut-être pour ça que les choses ont l'air d'aller trop vite? Mais nous y reviendrons.

Commençons par les dessins: quelle bonne surprise! Il y a un petit côté vintage années 90, mais pas trop. Les bouches surtout, sont dessinées de telle manière qu'on dirait que les personnages sont prêts à se rouler des patins. Super sensuelles, on dirait des cerises bien mûres. Ou des fraises prêtes à être croquées 😉

Let's start with the art: what a wonderful surprise! There is a little 1990s vintage thing to it, but not too much. Lips! Look at these lips! So detailed. They look like cherries, you want to bite them - or kiss them. Super sensual.

Le design des personnages est juste magnifique. Alors évidement ils sont tous minces et beaux, voire un peu squelletiques. Ca m'a pas mal rappelé , d'ailleurs. Peut-être à cause du monde du rock - enfin, dans ce cas, du death metal, mais niveau look y'a quelques similitudes avec le punk de Nana. (d'ailleurs je viens de trouver un photo de l'auteure avec les boucles d'oreille Vivienne Westwood. Ah! Je le savais! Les personnages de Nana portent tous des accessoires Vivienne Westwood)

The character design is oh so perfect. Of course they're all beautiful and thin (even a bot too much). It reminded me a lot of . Maybe because both comics deal with alternative indie music - punk for Nana and death metal for Marry Stayed Out All Night - but there's something similar in the way they look. (note: I just found a photo of the author wearing Vivienne Westwood earing, so YES they share the same fashion sense to some extent. Nana 's characters all wear Vivienne Westwood accessories).

Mention spéciale pour Kang Mu-gyeol, qui est censé être beau et qui l'est vraiment sous le coup de crayon de Woon Soo-yeon.

Special hurrah for Kang Mu-gyeol, who is supposed to be a hottie and who is actually drawn as such (not always the case :p ).

J'ai trouvé les décors et arrières plans assez travaillés, la mise en scène (je sais pas trop si je peux utiliser ce mot dans ce contexte :p) plutôt dynamique. Visuellement ça me plait beaucoup!

Backgrounds are super detailed and well drawn. The way the boxes are organised and the different perspectives make the manga super dynamic to read. Visually, it's a win!

L'histoire, par contre, m'a laissé un peu pantoise. En gros deux personnages un peu barrés tombent amoureux l'un de l'autre, un vrai coup de foudre. Ils se racontent des trucs assez profond sur l'hypocrisie de la société, se déchirent, se mettent ensemble... et décident de se marier. Je sais pas, ça va trop vite. Ca parait un peu artificiel.

Now to the story itself: it left me wondering wtf was happening. Two characters with strong personalities fall for each other at first sight. They talk about serious topics like the hypocrisy of our society, fight, get together... and are so deeply in love that they decide to get married. It goes too fast, it seems a bit artificial somehow.

Les grandes diatribes de Kang Mu-gyeol, censées bousculer les idées reçues de Mary, m'ont parues sorties de nulle part. Il a un sale caractère en plus de ça. Mary, quant à elle, est aussi un peu bizarre dans sa tête et s'ennerve pour un rien. Ont-ils vraiment besoin d'être aussi intenses?

Kang Mu-gyeol's long diatribes, which are supposed to shake Mary's prejudices, felt like they artificially landed there. on top of that Mu-gyeol has a hell of a bad temper. Mary is also weird and gets all worked up for nothing. They are super intense, a bit over the top of me. Do they really need to be so intense? even the way they eventually allow themselves to love each other is intense. too much, too fast.

Jeong In, qu'on apperçoit seulement dans quelques chapitres sur la fin de ce qui est disponible sur la toile, tombe amoureux malgré lui de Mary à cause de son père qui fait une fixette sur le fait que son fils doive épouser Mary. Le père de Jeong In, donc, prend régulièrement des photos de Mary (sans que celle-ci ne le sache, évidemment) et les donne à son fiston. Et voilà ti pas que In commence à se dire " oh mais pourquoi je ressens ça pour cette nana que j'ai pas vu depuis 15 ans quand on était gosses? Juste parce que je la vois en photo mon coeur fait boum boum ". Mouais.

Jeong In, to whom we're introduced towards the end of the available translated chapters, falls against his will for Mary, without even knowing her. His father is obsessed with the fact that Jeong In needs to marry Mary. In order to achieve his goal, he takes pictures of Mary all the time (without Mary's knowledge of course) and gives them to his son. And so, one fine day Jeong In starts wondering " why is my heart fluttering when I see the photos of this girl that I haven't seen in the past 15 years, and the last time we were still children? ". Really???

Les personnages secondaires sont sympas, j'ai bien aimé les copines de Mary et le pote musico de Kang Mu-gyeol.

Secondary characters are nice enough. I liked Mary's besties and Mu-gyeol's music band.

Y'a aussi pas mal de moment assez drôles. Le nom du groupe de death metal de Mu-gyeol est marrant: Strawberry corpse (cadavre de fraise), et du coup ils bombardent de fraises leur public. Bwahahahah j'ai bien ri! Mary, qui n'a pas envie d'être couverte de fraise, y va avec un parapluie (re bwahahahah :p ).

There are also a lot of funny moments. The first one is defo Mu-gyeol's band name: Strawberry Corpse (bwahahaha). And so, during concerts, they make strawberies rains on their audience.Love it!! Mary, totally unphased and who doesn't want to be covered in strawberry mash, goes there with her umbrella (bwahahahaha bis repetita!!!)

La rencontre entre nos deux héros est aussi assez comique: Mary demande un remboursement de son pressing parce que ses habits sont dégoutants, couverts de fraises écrasées. Du coup l'autre la prend pour une folle :p Puis ils doivent se revoir pour un prétexte à la con (de la lingerie égarée) et là aussi c'est plutôt marrant :p

The way Mary and mu-gyeol meet is also quite funny: she asks him for dry cleaning fees since her new shirt is covered in strawberry mash. So Mu-gyeol just assumes she's kind of crazy :p Then they have to (reluctantly) see each other again because she gave him the wrong package (lingerie instead of shirt) and that's also quite hilarious :p

Mu-gyeol tombe complètement amoureux de cette fille qui n'en n'a rien à taper de sa musique (il est habitué aux groupies donc forcément, ça le change). Quant à Mary, elle est happée par la présence magnétique de Mu-gyeol sur scène, et par son petit sourire ravageur dans la vraie vie. Cute.

Mu-gyeol completely falls for this girl who doesn't give a shit about his music and himself (he's used to groupies, so that's a change for him). And Mary is completely taken into Mu-gyeol's charisma when he's on stage, and by his cute smile in real life. Awwww!

Malheureusement je ne peux pas en dire plus, vu que je n'ai pas pu en lire plus. C'est bien dommage. Les pères de Mary et de Jeong In ont l'air bien barrés du ciboulot, pour falsifier un certificat de mariage dans le dos de leurs enfants.

And so that's it. I can't say much more since I haven't read more. Such a pity. Mary and Jeong In's fathers seem to be quite crazy to have forged a marriage certificate behind their children's back.

Je ne sais pas trop quoi en penser. Des fois c'est profond, des fois ça va trop vite, des fois c'est marrant. La plupart du temps, c'est intense.

I don't know what to think. Some times it's deep and serious, sometimes it goes too fast, sometimes it's funny. Most of the time, it's intense.

Il y a de nombreuses similitudes mais aussi beaucoup de choses différentes d'avec le drama. J'aurais vraiment aimé pouvoir lire tout le manhwa pour pouvoir comparer. J'aurais aussi aimé comprendre certains choix scénaristiques de la série, qui étaient des fois un peu bof, mais si ça vient du manhwa alors ça peut se comprendre.

Of course there are lots of similarities with the drama, but there are also lots of differences? I would have loved to be able to finish the whole mahwa series to be able to compare them properly. Might have also helped me to understand some stuff in the drama that weren't making much sense, but if it's based on an element from the original manhwa, then it kind of makes sense.

Si on se base sur le drama, et sur le titre, on peut supposer que Mary va devoir passer du temps avec ses deux maris (l'officiel et l'officieux) et devoir choisir au bout d'un laps de temps donné. Mais ce n'est qu'une supposition.

Based on the title and the drama, Mary will certainly have to spend time with both her husbands and chose between them after a given amount of time. Of course it's only a supposition.

Ce début de manhwa m'a donc beaucoup plus visuellement, par contre j'ai trouvé l'histoire un peu intense et tirée par les cheveux. J'espère qu'un jour je pourrais lire la suite!

In a nutshell: visually striking, but the story is a bit fast and intense. I really hope that I'll be able to read more chapters in the future!

L'auteure - Manhwaga

Won Soo-yeon est née le 12 janvier 1961. C'est une auteure sud-coréenne de manhwa traitant de romance. Elle a fait ses débuts en 1987 et a depuis publié plusieurs titres. Sa série de manhwa la plus connue est Full House. Deux de ses séries ont été adaptées en drama pour le petit écran: Full House (2004) et Mary Stayed Out All Night (2010).

Elle est mariée à Kang Doha, un autre manhwaga, avec qui elle a deux enfants.

Won soo-yeon (born January 12, 1961) is a South Korean female manhwa artist who writes in the shoujo (romance) genre. She debuted in 1987 and has published several titles; among her best known serials are Full House (2002) and its sequel Full House 2 (2005). Two of her comics have been adapted into television dramas: Full House (2004) and Mary Stayed Out All Night (2010).

She is married to fellow manhwa artist Doha Kang, with whom she has two children.

Kdrama

Comme je l'ai dit plus haut, ce webtoon (cartoon publié sur le web) a été adapté en série télévisée (" drama ") en Corée. C'est d'ailleurs le drama qui m'a amenée au manhwa :p

As said above, this webtoon (cartoon published on the internet) was adapted into a TV series (called " drama " in Korean). And so I started reading the manhwa after having watched the drama :p

A noter que le drama a été tourné en 2010, alors que le manhwa a été publié de 2009 à 2012. Ca veut donc dire que le drama se base sur les éléments publiés entre 2009 et 2010, et pas au delà. La fin du manhwa est donc certainement différente de celle de la série - mais pour l'instant je ne peux pas me prononcer vu que bowdel y'a que 42 chapitres traduits. Siouplé, si vous parlez coréen et que vous avez du temps à perdre, vous ne pourriez pas traduire le reste? siouplé siouplé sioupléééé!!!

Note that the drama was shot in 2010, when the mahwa was published from 2009 to 2012. Which means that the drama was based only on material published from 2009 to 2010 and not further. The ending is thus probably very different in the manhwa -but indeed right I can't tell, since the manhwa hasnt been translated fully aaaaaaahhhh!!! If anyone speak Korean and has some free time, pliz pliz pliz translate this manhwa for me? Thank yoooouuu).

Je vous ferai un topo sur le drama la prochaine fois. Je voudrais juste dire que c'est mimi, ça casse pas des briques mais c'est addictif, et y'a une bande son du tonerre. Et Jang Geun-suk dans le rôle principal (mon nouveau crush après Lee Min-ho et Matsujun. Je ne suis pas fidèle :p ).

I'll tell you more about the drama in the next article. In short: it's cute, it isn't the drama of the year or even of the decade, but it's highly addictive and the original sound track is a-ma-zing. Oh, and Jang Geun-suk as the lead (my new crush after Lee Min-ho and Matsujun - I know I change a bit too often :p )
