Amelia is a teacher in a high school from a " difficult " neighborhood of London. Until the day she decides to buy a cottage in the countryside that needs to be fully renovated.

J'ai recu ce livre de la part de Françoise, dans le cadre d'un swap de printemps. Je dois dire que j'ai laissé ce livre de côté pendant longtemps car il " sentait " la chick lit, et que je n'en n'avais pas envie à ce moment là. Je l'ai finalement ouvert début septembre, à la rentrée, et ai été charmée par le Charmant Cottage d'Amelia 😉

I got this book in a Spring Swap. I must say that I left the book aside for quite a while. It screamed " chicklit " and I just didn't feel like it at the time. I finally opened it early September and was charmed by Amelia's charming cottage 😉

Résume - Synopsis

Amelia et Jack sont mariés depuis deux ans. Ils sont propriétaires d'un petit appartement dans le centre de Londres, dans lequel l'espace est tellement restreint qu'Amelia a dû mettre au garde meuble les meubles qu'elle a reçu en héritage de sa grand-mère. Amelia est prof dans un lycée à problème, elle s'implique à fond dans la vie de ses élèves et essaye de leur donner un tant soit peu le goût de la littérature. C'est une vie un peu stressante mais plein de joies, avec des amies fidèles qui l'entourent.

Amelia and Jack have been married for two years. They own a small apartment downtown London, where space is so scarce that Amelia had to put the furniture she inherited from her grand mother in storage. Amelia is an English teacher in a difficult high school, she tries hard to help her students at school and outside. It is a stressful life but very joyous, surrounded by faithful friends.

Un beau jour, Amelia tombe sur une " liste de choses à faire avant 30 ans ", et parmis elles se trouve " habiter à la campagne ". Comme elle et Jack ont parlé de vendre leur petit appartement pour quelque chose d'un peu plus grand, elle saute sur l'occasion pour aller carrément voir dans la campagne environnante de Londres.

One fine day, Amelia finds a list of " 30 things to do before turning 30 ", among which is " living in the countryside ". As she and Jack are looking for a bigger place to live, they take the jump and start looking in the countryside around London.

Après que le cottage de leurs rêves leur passe sous le nez pour cause de finances qui ne suivent pas, ils découvrent un cottage à retaper entièrement pour une somme modique et se lancent.

After their dream cottage is bought by someone else because of their strained finances, they find an old cottage that needs to be completely renovated, within their financial means. They buy it.

Entre la rénovation, l'adaptation de la vie dans un village, la tentation des beaux mâles du coin, la question d'agrandir la famille ou non, et les trajets pour aller au boulot, Amelia et Jack réussiront-ils à faire de ce cottage le foyer dont ils ont rêvé?

Between renovating, adapting to village life, being tempting by handsome villagers, wondering if they should have babies and long trips to go to work downtown, Amelia and Jack will go through ups and downs. to create the household they dreamt of.

Mon Avis - Review

J'ai trouvé ce livre sympatique à lire, même si en fait, j'aurais dû le lire en automne ou encore mieux, en hiver -je l'ai lu en juillet). Ce livre est un pur produit chick lit, dont le thème principal est la rénovation d'une maison de campagne. Au travers des rénovation des différentes pièces, notre héroïne va petit à petit faire le point sur sa vie. Y'a des petits twists qui restent mignons. Ca ne vous tiendra pas en haleine, c'est sympa et voilà 🙂 le seul truc qui m'a un peu chiffoné, c'est quelque chose sur la toute fin, mais nous y reviendrons.

It was a nice read, even though it is more suited for an autumn/winter read (I read it in summer). It is a pure chick lit book, with renovating an old cottage as its center theme. Through the renovation of the different rooms of the house, Amelia will have the opportunity to think about her life and what she really wants. There are small twists here and there, cute but not overwhelming or stressful. Cute. The only thing that I didn't really like was something towards the end of the book, but we'll get to it in due time.

Amelia, donc, troque sur un coup de tête sa vie londonienne pour un cottage à rénover de A à Z. L'évolution d'Amélia (et de sa relation avec son homme) se fait sur trois saisons: été, automne, hiver. Le livre est divisé en autant de parties.

So: Amelia decides all of a sudden to trade her London life for a cottage to renovate from A to Z. The evolution of Amelia (and her relationship with her husband Jack) happens over three seasons: Summer, Autumn, Winter. The book is thus divided into three parts, following the seasons.

D'abord, Amélia se prend 30 piges en pleine poire, et se pose tout plein de questions: ma vie est-elle telle que je voudrais qu'elle soit? etc... bref, le genre de question exsitentielle qu'on se pose quand un gros anniversaire avec un zéro arrive. Du coup elle décide de changer de vie. Pour ce faire, elle démissione du collège de délinquants dans lequel elle essayait de faire une différence, mais où la direction fait semblant de ne rien voir, pour aller à la campagne rénover un cottage en piteux état.

First of, Amelia turns 30 and starts wondering about lots of things: is my life the life I always wanted to live etc... the kind of stuff you start wondering about when you turn 30 :p And so she decides to change her life in quite a drastic way, quitting her job in the delinquent high school where she's been trying to make a difference for years to no avail, swapping it for the complete renovation of a cottage in the countryside.

Cliché? et nous n'avons pas fini 😉 Amélia va donc être à la maison alors que son mec, Jack, avec qui elle est mariée depuis deux ans, doit se taper une heure de route pour aller bosser à son studio de dessin animé (parce que c'est trop cool comme job) à Londres. Cette heure de route va symboliser la distance qui, peu à peu, s'installe entre nos deux tourteraux.

Cliché much? And there is more 🙂 Amelia is staying home to direct the renovation while her husband Jack drives for two hours every morning to be at work downtown London at his cartoon studio (because he's cool like that :p ). These hours of driving are a symbol of the physical and mental distance that will slowly but surely separate our two lovebirds.

Outre le fait que de se concentrer sur des tâches purement domestiques va l'éloigner de son mari, Amélia va aussi se redécouvrir elle-même au travers des travaux de rénovations. Y'a une petite tentation qui passe mais qui finalement ne prend pas, vu que c'était tout dans la tête d'Amelia, et plus symptomatique de son mal être dans son couple que la réalité. J'ai apprécié qu'elle ne trompe pas son mec malgré les moments tendus que son couple traversait.

Other than the fact that focusing on purely domestic tasks is making Amelia more and more distant from her husband, who continues to have a professional life, Amelia is also rediscovering herself through the renovation process. There is a kid of temptation happening at a certain point, but in fact it was only in her head, and more symptomatic of the problems in her own relationship with her husband than anything real. I appreciated the fact that she didn't cheat on her husband, even though she was going through something tough with him.

Ce qui m'a le plus embêtée dans cette histoire, c'est les bébés. Amélia ne veut pas de bébé, et Jack oui. Ils ont des amis qui ont " eu un accident " et dont l'enfant va arriver d'une minute à l'autre. Dans cet autre couple, Sunita et Nick (hello la diversité raciale avec l'inclusion d'une indienne au casting!), c'est Sunita qui est prête à avoir un bébé et Nick qui n'est pas trop sur: il sort, il boit, il fume, il panique. Il y a aussi Carly, qui sort avec un parent d'élève et qui se retrouve donc de facto belle-mère d'un ado.

What really bothered me in this story: babies. Amelia doesn't want to have children, but her husband jack does. They have friends who got pregnant " by accident " and whose baby is going to pop anytime soon. In this other couple, Nick and Sunita (Yay for diversity with Sunita, who is of Indian descent), Sunita is the one ready to have a baby and Nick is the one freaking out. he goes out, drinks, smokes, panicks. And let's not forget Carly, Amelia's best friend who is also a teacher, and who is going out with the father of one of her pupils, thus becoming de facto a mother to a 17 year old.

Mais donc, Amélia finit par changer d'avis sur la question bébé, et ça m'a fait un pincement au coeur. Ok ils ont construit leur foyer, ils se sont ramibochés, mais faut-il vraiment qu'une femme soit femme en enfantant? ne peut-on pas être heureux dans le compagnonage pur? et je dis ça en ayant moi-même deux enfants :p Le fait de porter aux nues l'enfantement, comme un passage obligé de la condition de femme et même de la notion de famille, m'a gênée.

And so, Amelia eventually changes her mind and agrees to have babies. And I kind of didn't like it. Ok they built a household, they made over, but do they really need babies? Can't a woman be a woman without birthing? Can't a couple find happiness in companionship? And I say such things, having two children myself. It really bothered me to no end. It's Ok not to have children. It's a choice that should be respected. Women can have children, but don't have to. End of rent :p

La construction du livre est plutôt sympa: trois parties dédiées chacunes à une saison, symbolisant l'évolution d'Amélia dans son changement de vie. Eté: suffocant dans son métier et son petit appartement, crise de la trentaine. Automne: achat d'un cottage et départ pour la campagne, coup au moral devant l'ampleur de la tâche qui attend notre héroïne. Hiver: finalisation de la maison et Noël en famille.

I liked the way the book was organised: three parts, each dedicated to a season, symbolising the evolution of Amelia during this life changing phase of her life. Summer: suffocating, like she is in her tiny apartment and in her career. Autumn: buy a cottage, change life, arrive in the countryside, a bit depressed when she realises how much there is to do. Winter: finishing touches in the family nest and family Christmas celebrations at home.

Le thème de la famille, justement, est central dans ce livre. Jack et Amélia achètent " un foyer " et non pas juste " une maison ". D'où un petit malentendu entre Amélia et son mec. Elle va " juste " vivre à la campagne, alors que lui se projette en père de famille vu qu'il y a assez d'espace pour des enfants. Soit.

Family is, indeed, a notion central to the book. Jack and Amelia buy a " household ", not just " a house ". Hence a little misunderstanding between Amelia and her husband. She is " just " going to live in the countryside, as per her list of stuff to do before turning 30. On the other hand, Jack thinks that they are going to start a family, since they're buying a big house with many rooms. Alright.

Il y a aussi une histoire de secret de famille: Amélia découvre que la vieille dame qui habitait la maison avant eux a eu un enfant hors mariage, une petite fille qu'elle a du abandonner. En fait c'est un moyen de faire réfléchir Amelia à la maternité. Idem pour sa copine Suni qui tombe enceinte par accident.

There is also a family secret held in the cottage: Amelia discovers that the old lady who used to live there had a baby daughter before being married, a little girl born out of wedlock that she had to abandon. This is just a trick from the author to make Amelia think about motherhood. Same goes for her friend Sunita and her surprise baby. I didn't like these " tricks ". They were too obvious.

Mais je m'égare. La notion de famille, donc: Amelia se rapproche de sa mère, de son père, de sa demie-soeur rebelle, et de son mec. Elle débrouille les fils emêlés de la relation de ses parents divorcés. Elle se rapproche aussi de la famille à qui appartenait avant la maison, et ils se retrouvent à fêter Noël tous ensemble dans la maison rénovée. Bref, la famille est vraiment au coeur de ce livre.

C'est mimi.

But I'm going off a tangent. So, the notion of family: Amelia gets closer to her mom, her dad, her rebellious half-sister, and eventually her husband. She untangles all the old family dynamics between her divorced parents. She also gets very close to the family who once owned the house, so much that she invites them over for Christmas once the renovation works are done. yes, family is defo at the heart of the book.

Cute.

Je dois dire que le personnage qui m'a le plus intéressée est celui de la demie soeur rebelle de 16 ans qui se trouve enfin au contact de la nature. Super cliché mais j'aime bien les bad girls qui trouvent la rédemption.

I must say that the character that i liked the most was the rebellious 16 year old half sister, who finally finds herself when she gets in contact with nature and animals. Couldn't be more cliche, but I have a soft spot for bad girls finding redemption.

J'ai aussi adoré les rénovations de la maison. Les chapitres dédiés à la rénovation portent le titre de la pièce à rénover et commencent toujours par le mood board (littéralement " planche d'état d'esprit ") qu'Amelia a fait pour chaque pièce. Et puis elle se met à rénover le truc, et en parallèle elle résout un truc dans sa vie. Une construction facile mais efficace.

The house renovation process was also super interesting. The chapters dedicated to it are dedicated to one room each. They always start with the mood board that Amelia put together for each room. then she starts the works and finds herself in the process. Efficient, even though not super innovative.

Bref, c'est un livre sympa à lire maintenant que le temps se rafraichit, ou si vous prévoyez de rénover/rédécorer chez vous. C'est plein de bons sentinements aussi. Ca ne casse pas des briques, mais c'est efficace dans son genre.

In a nutshell: a very nice book to read, perfect for the season, or if you plan to renovate/redecorate your place. Full of positivity as well. Not the book of the year, but a very nice book nonetheless.

Illustration et traduction - Art and translation

Le titre anglais donne un ton différent au livre: Fireside dream, qui veut dire " rêve au coin du feu ". Tout de suite on est dans l'ambiance de Noël et tutti quanti. Le titre français laisse complètement tomber cet aspect hivernal. On garde l'ambiance cosy avec " charmant ".

Une des illustrations en français représente des pots de peintures, ce qui change des sempiternels cottages :p Vu que la verison anglaise du titre renvoie à Noël, on y trouve des éléments s'y rapportant.

The title in French is " Amelia's Charming Cottage ". Nothing about a " fireside dream " at all!

Thus the art on the English covers is evocative of Christmas, whereas the French version depict, well... a cottage in the countryside :p

One French cover art is about paint and i like the fact that it is about the renovation work and not the cottage itself. Refreshing.
